Sky lanterns, called Khom Loy in Thailand, are a traditional Asian symbol of good luck. They are often launched enmasse at festivals to send wishes to the heavens.
These traditional Chinese lanterns are made of flame-proofed, biodegradable tissue paper, a bamboo ring at the bottom and a thin cross-wire supporting a square of wax paper, the fuel for the lantern.
Sky lanterns are not fireworks and are legal in just about every state. After being lit they slowly fill with hot air. Release them when you feel them tugging at your fingers. They continue to rise for some time and do not come back down until they've completely burned out, making them extremely safe.
